Yesterday was the start of the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup in South Africa. This tournament takes place the year before the next World Cup and is located in the same country that will host it. So, South Africa is hosting this time and hoping to show the world that it is ready to host the World Cup next year despite worries over security and stadiums not being finished on time.There are two groups of four teams for a total of eight teams. It includes the winner of the last World Cup, the winner of the Gold Cup, the winner of Copa America, the winner of the African Cup, the winner of the Euro, the winner of the Oceania region, the winner of the Middle East, and the host. These teams in order are Italy, USA, Brazil, Egypt, Spain, New Zealand, Iraq, and South Africa.
Group A is Spain, South Africa, New Zealand and Iraq. So, Spain has it easy as proven true by their 5-0 drubbing of New Zealand yesterday. Iraq were able to tie South Africa 0-0.
Group B is Italy, Brazil, Egypt and USA. Again we have been put in the "group of death".
Two teams from each group will go through to the semi-finals. I believe it will be Spain and South Africa from Group A but would like to see Iraq surprise people. It will most likely be Brazil and Italy from Group B but the USA fans (me) can still believe that we have a chance to upset.
Tonight is a big night as USA play Italy!!!!! COME ON USA!

I think Aix has a football team too, the Argonauts or something like that. I remember a job posting that they were looking for English-speaking announcers for the matches.
